What is Hyaluronic Acid and How is it Commonly Used for the Skin?

Hyaluronic acid is a powerhouse ingredient that can be found in a variety of products, from serums to moisturizers and even injectables. This ingredient comes with a wide range of benefits – it moisturizes the skin, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, replenishes cell moisture, speeds wound healing and brings moisture to the surface of your skinResearch shows that hyaluronic acid has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, even when applied topically

What is Hyaluronic Acid?

Hyaluronic Acid is a naturally occurring type of sugar molecule, called glycosaminoglycan, which is found in human connective tissueIt binds with water in our bodies to create a jelly-like substance, which acts as a moisturizing lubricant to create a cushioning effect between the fibres in the skin, collagen and elastin, and even in the joints, nerves, hair, skin, and eyes. Once absorbed it infuses the epidermis layer of the skin with valuable moisture, and acts as a humectant agent to draw moisture from its environment into the skin. As the substance penetrates the surface, it binds water to skin cells, which helps keep the skin plumped and hydrated. This multi-purpose ingredient is commonly used in:

Skincare

Just as the production of collagen slows down with time, so does the amount of naturally occurring hyaluronic acid in our body – which decreases as we get older. This damage results in fine lines and wrinkles, dark spots, and dry, irritated skin. Hyaluronic acid helps promote skin cell regeneration by offering extra hydration and barrier protection to the skin, ultimately reducing the visibility of premature ageing.

Hyaluronic acid is an important addition to your daily skin-care regimen and forms the building blocks to more hydrated, youthful skin. Topically applied hyaluronic acid will help pull moisture from the deeper layers of the skin to infuse the surface with moistureBy promoting proper moisture balance in the skin, hyaluronic acid prevents the over-production of oil that clogs pores and causes breakouts.

Injectables

Dermal fillers are small gel injections, a form of hyaluronic acid made up of various types of collagens. Once injected beneath the skinit attracts water to regenerate volume and recreate lost structure. Since hyaluronic acid’s composition is so closely related to substances in our bodies, it works well as a filler that does not cause major irritation.

These fillers are attractive to most clients because they are non-permanentnon-invasive injectables – and its effects are completely reversible. They also help your skin by hydrating and boosting collagen production without the need for invasive surgery, while still adding the desired volume and structure to the area

Dermal fillers can be used to treat:

  • Nasolabial (Smile Lines)
  • Marionette Lines
  • Jawline Contouring
  • Lip Enhancement
  • Cheek Enhancement
  • Chin Contouring

With any injectable treatment, bruising and swelling are the most common side effects, however, these effects are generally short-lived. Hyaluronic acid emulatenatural substances in the body, so side effects are very rare. When administered by an experienced, trained practitioner and used in conjunction with other techniques, fillers can give the effect of a non-surgical facelift.
