The Benefits of Medical Grade Chemical Peels: Which Type is Right for your Skin?

Medical Grade Chemical Peels are non-invasive procedures used to resurface and improve the appearance of the skin. A chemical peel damages the skin in a controlled manner, producing a superficial wound to induce a healing process in the skin. As the natural healing process repairs the damage, the skin’s appearance is improvedby stripping away the damaged, superficial layer of the skin to reveal a newer, fresher layer of skin beneath. They have been clinically proven to:

  • Help treat acne.
  • Minimize the appearance of pores.
  • Diminish the appearance of unwanted pigmentation issues such as sun damage and age spots.
  • Diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Improve persistent skin redness.
  • Provide an immediate boost to skin’s clarity, radiance, brightness, tone, and texture.

Medical grade chemical peels can also provide several preventative benefits, such as improving cell turnover rates, preventing future breakouts, and enhancing the penetration of active ingredients applied along with the peel.

There are multiple levels of treatments that exist when it comes to chemical peels. The nature of the chemicals applied to the skin determines the depth at which the damage occursthey are categorized as:

Superficial Peels

Common agents used in light peels may include combinations of alpha hydroxy acids and beta hydroxy acids, such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, and maleic acid. All these chemicals are milder choices than those used for deeper peels. You can repeat these treatments at regular intervals to achieve your desired results. These types of peels can provide smoother, brighter-looking skin. Superficial peels do not damage skin below the epidermis, they work at the most superficial layer of the skin, by removing thin lesions on the skin surface, to reduce pigmentation and surface dryness.

Medium-depth Peels

Medium depth chemical peels penetrate through the superficial epidermis of the skin and reach the papillary dermis, the uppermost layer of the dermis. They are used to create a youthful skin texture by improving the evenness of skin colour and texture. Depending on the intensity of the chemical peel the appearance of wrinkles, sun damage, skin discolouration, blotchiness, brown spots, scars, and certain precancerous skin growths can be reduced.

Deep Peels

Deep peels are an aggressive skin resurfacing technique that improves the appearance of the skin, and generally reach the deeper layers of the dermis. By reaching the reticular layer, deep chemical peels have dramatic effects on more severe wrinkles and skin discolourationDepending on the intensity of the chemical peel the appearance of wrinkles, sun damage, pigmentation, blotchiness, brown spots, scars, and certain skin growths can also be reduced.

The depth of damage depends on the nature and concentration of the chemicals in the peeling solution and the length of time they are permitted to interact with the skin. At ADM Skin Clinic our selection of chemical peels ranges in strength from mildly superficial to deeply resurfacing. We provide a wide array of treatment options depending on what your skin needs and how sensitive your skin is. These include:

1) Gentle Retinol Peel

Compared to other types of chemical peels, this treatment gently exfoliates the skin resulting in a clearer complexion, and the added retinol booster increases cellular turnover and reduces discolouration. It brightens the skin, and its anti-ageing benefits can minimise the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, boosting the skin’s elasticity and plumpness. Because these are fairly gentle peels, they can be used by new patients with sensitive skin and by those who aren’t good candidates for other milder types of chemical peels. 1-3 days downtime, suitable for all skin types.

2) Pure Retinol Peel

For skin in need of rejuvenation, this retinoid peel smooths, brightens, and evens skin tone through increased cell turnover and peeling without irritation. Advanced cases of ageing, acne and pigmentation will soak up these revolutionary formulas containing 4% and 6% pure retinol. This applied solution exfoliates dead skin cells and helps healthy skin cells rise to the surface to calm and rejuvenate the skin while fighting off free radical damage. Up to 10 days downtime, suitable for normal to more resilient skin types.

3) Perfecting Peel

A chemical resurfacing peel that not only improves the look and feel of the skin but will also effectively reduce the appearance of acne scars, provide anti-bacterial benefits, and reduce the overproduction of oils in the skin. This gentle alpha hydroxy acid solution allows for substantial improvement in the appearance of fine lines and uneven pigmentation while making your skin look and feel softer, smoother, and more radiant. Acne scars and enlarged pores may become less noticeable, and breakouts may be reduced. 3-5 days downtime, and suitable for all skin types.

4) Red Carpet Facial Treatment

combination of a gentle enzymatic facial and alpha-hydroxy acid peel, this antioxidant treatment provides an instant glow for a flawless complexion. This solution removes dead skin cells from the face and reveals younger skin cells underneath, giving you a beautiful and radiant glow. An overall rejuvenation treatment to help combat premature signs of ageing and even out the skin’s complexion. It works by stimulating oxygenation and circulation by drawing oxygen to the surface to brighten and hydrate the skin. A treatment with no downtime, and suitable for all skin types.

5) Deep Pore Peel

A gentle alpha hydroxy acid and enzyme peeling solution that decreases inflammation by detoxifying and exfoliating the skin while decongesting clogged pores. Its formulation helps to calm and purify the skin to promote a clearer complexion and even skin tone. This chemical resurfacing treatment is most effective for those that suffer from thick, oily, acneprone skin. 2-4 days downtime, and suitable for those with combination, oily skin.

6) ZO Skin Health 3 Step Peel

This 3-Step peel is followed by an at-home retinol treatment designed to stimulate collagen and restore your skin’s moisture balance. The treatments utilise a blend of exfoliants, retinol and multi-action agents to help improve skin health and treat signs of ageing, sun damage, dull skin, Melasma, acne, and uneven texture concerns.

The skin is especially sensitive after a chemical peel. It is essential to practice strict sun avoidance during and after the healing process. The skin may remain sun-sensitive for some time after the peel. The frequency of post-treatment physician visits will depend upon the depth of the peel and the preferences of the physician.

The right choice of treatment depends on what your skin needs and how sensitive your skin is. The best course of action will be determined in an initial consultation with one of our qualified practitioners.
